tutorial request for GIMP

When there is an opportunity, could someone put up a tutorial for creating 3D objects in GIMP. I tried translating the PS tutorial into GIMPese but I get lousy results. GIMP has embossing in the filters/distorts menu. Its probably a stupid setting Im messing up. They come out shallow or too rough and cheesy looking.
