    A-10 WIP

Currently working on the 'Warthog', and before I continue, I'd just like a few second opinions on what I've got so far. Of course, there's bits that clearly aren't finished (the wing is a bit messy, right now!), but any tips would be helpful, with regard to the shading, especially around the nose (underside) and underneath the wing.

And one with all the guidelines, to show what else needs to be worked on.

I can upload larger images, if need be.

    Thanks!

Hey there, thanks for posting this. Looks like you are off to a good start IMO. Going from memory, the shape and outlines look to be going together well.

The nose shading, I seem to recall that the somewhat boxy form of the fuselage (which you have captured), tends to become progressively softer farther down the cone? I'll have to double check, but if so, then I'd say the shading could be gently wider (and lighter) as it approaches the tip of the nose.

I managed to complete this tonight (well, there are a couple of details missing, and I'll leave you to figure out what they are - I'm in no mood to add these at 2am! ).

Let me know what you think, and if there are any improvements that can be made!

    Re: A-10 WIP

Very good start indeed. What size is your image? I'd give you this advice, which concerns shading mostly:

-extend the shading on the top of the fuselage, to show its rounded shape
-the shading of the lower fuselage between the engine's shadow and the tailplane needs to be changed. As is now, it's not coherent with the rest of the aircraft's shading
-question of coherence again: the bend on the top of the fuselage is show with shading, but the wingtip bend is done with lighting, which gives the impression it doesn't curve down (looks vertical)
-once again: you've put some white highlight on the fuselage, but not on the engine pod. Adding some highlight to it would give it a nice rounded shape.
-depending on the size of the image, you might want to add stenciling to your aircraft. The A-10 has got loads of it. This is one possible reference: Air Warfare Forum :: Log in
Notice how horrible the colours are on that bird.

I know it's always difficult and frustrating to have such things pointed out (as it means more work when you thought you were finished). Your profile is very nice nonetheless so keep on going. I've learned a lot of things from people's advice here, so it's well worth the frustration.

Don't worry, I SAID I was finished, but I knew there was things that needed to be improved/worked upon.

Image size is currently at 2800 pixels, so considerably larger than what you see here.

Once I get the time, I'll try to improve it with the tips you've provided. Thanks.

edit: Oh, and with regards to the wingtip being curved, I got the impression from photographs that it was actually quite a flat surface, certainly not as curved as the fuselage, at any rate. Airliners.net Photos: USA - Air Force Fairchild A-10A Thunderbolt II I can see now how it curves away, towards the rear end of the wingtip, but the front looks pretty flat. Thoughts?

Indeed, you can rework it later, or simply try to improve such or such aspect later on. I often work on a particular topic and then draw a new type of aircraft to apply what I've just studied. It's less frustrating at least.

At any rate, your A-10 looks very nice. I hope you will show us your future drawings?

Oh, of course! Although it probably won't be for a while. By the end of a profile, I'm usually sick of drawing them! Then sooner or later, I'll be in the mood to another...
