    Re: WIP: Fouga CM.170 Magister

Looking at an article on the Blackburn Skua in a magazine. It is accompanied by a side view about six inches long (150mm). It reproduces every rivet and quite a lot of grime enhanced panel lines. The effect is striking. But if you look at the accompanying photos, which are good quality official pictures, the rivets and most panel lines are barely visible. No grime as far as I can see but some weathering. Profile artists, like modellers, can go a little overboard when it comes at such things. Surface detail should be in proportion to the scale of the image. Ask the question, will the image be big enough that if it was the real plane I would clearly see every rivet? There are some images on this site for which the answer is most definitely yes but for most the answer is no.

    anadc4

You just took all the fun out of creating profiles with the above post. I will post no longer, I quit, as I don't think I can go on any longer without counting rivets. goodbye cruel world.

Well my #1 problem is getting good enough photo reference. I've noticed that planes left outdoors and rusting will usually show the rivets better.

This is the latest stage of my work: riveting + work on the V-tail:

I've also corrected the fin/guard and the space for the tailwheel.

    I agree with your comment about over-weathering anadc4: it's a common mistake.

The BWB does look like a difficult one to shade/light.

That looks great. I think the fasteners on the framing are more pronounced because they are designed to be removed when the glass needs replacing. They may also be steel in steel frames. I was thinking about flush-rivetted aluminium skins when I made my comments about the Skua drawing's rivets.

Just what IS a Fouga? Is it something like a Churchill?

It does look pretty good so far but I can't help but notice there's no color on it! GET PAINTING

Are you saying 50% grey is NOT a colour? You've always been such an extremist! lol

I still want to advance on the basics before colouring it. I've added antennaes, intakes (the thing has dozens of 'em) and a few panel lines:

The Fouga is like a Churchill, without the tracks. But I'll add them soon, promise!

    And now more work:

No colours yet Blowhard, but some metal skin. I'm very interested in everyone's opinion here: I've done the classic brown/blue earth/sky reflection thing. My feeling is that this does give a metallic feel to the plane, but that it's not necessarily realistic. I might make it even lighter than it is actually. The Magister was usually not as shiny as those slippery American airshow birds which reflect as well as a mirror.

I've also added a "weathering" effect: solid black layer, added noise, vertical blur, and then "ocean" filter. This is just an experiment but it does break the smoothness of the drawing and give a slightly corroded effect IMO.

I'm looking forward to suggestions, comments & opinions!
