    [Bandwagon] F4U RNZAF

    Hi

I've done cartoony type profiles in t he past but this is my first real go at it.

I really need help in 'Fleshing' out the shape and creating the light and shadow, If anyones got tip or links to help that would be great.

I would really like to finish this and not get fed up with it and leave it.

    Cheers
    Travis

It's a good start. When you'll start doing the shading and highlights, keep this in mind: shade/highlight until you think it's just right. Once you're there, double the shading and highlighting.

Study artists you like to see how they create shape and try to do the same thing. That's the best way to learn IMHO.

and get rid of the pre shading crap from your panel lines, it's a profile not a model.

now that said, start with your shadow along the lower half, then just a very small amount along the top, do this as a seperate layer, you can erase it then down to the level you need, then do another layer for your highlight, fist run should be just above centre covering about 2 thirds of the depth, but before doing any of this go through your photos and study how the light and dark lay on the real thing.

practice till your arms drop off, then practice some more

John's right about the practice, but I'd keep the preshading, after all, what is Profiling but two-dimensional scale modelling?

Looking good. You should try following BH's advice on the wing: to make it "stick out" more, try using a gradient on it. As it is, it doesn't stand out enough IMHO.

You are on a learning curve. If you are serious about this, LISTEN to what others teach. There can be no finer academy of learning than here if you wish to profile. Your start is admirable and I hope to see a lot of progress soon.

You seem to be a little stuck getting the shape out of the Corsair, so i took the Liberty of spending 5 minutes on it to see if I could improve things a little, and maybe give you some idea of how you can proceed. Hope you don't mind. What I have done here couldn't be simpler. It consists of 5 layers only.
1: base layer consisting of a white gradient set to soft light. (this gives the washed out appearance that most aircraft had in the SWP)
2:Using a feathered black brush I created the shadow at the bottom of the airframe and then hit it with Gaussian blur for effect, and adjusted the opacity to suit.
3:I repeated step 2, at the very top of the airframe, with a smaller brush.
4: You guessed it, I did this again twice, but through the middle, and using white instead of black. First time using a larger brush then the second and then adjusting opacity to suit.
Now I make no claims that this is the definitive way to shade/add volume to a profile, but I reckon that it is a reasonable starting point to develop a technique to suit your goals.
Oh, and its a pretty solid foundation that your working on, you should seen the first Corsair I ever tried.

    Hi

    No Problems with the pic,
Its helped a lot, its exactly the kind of help I want actually

Heres the same as last with the lighting you suggested, I dont want to over shine it as Kiwi Corsairs were as weathered as they come.

But I will continue the try and perfect it.

note: im not worrying about the rear fuselage atm.

BINGO! Teach a man how to use Photoshop and you'll never see him again.
