I think I'd also have to take into account that learning curve needed to go from the 2d to 3d. Would take me a long time to be effective on the level i am on now!

Goodwood, true... there's plenty of (Japanese) books with Shinden's on the cover, this is the first ever with a Ki-98!

Lieuwe, also true... 3D can be a steep learning curve!

I have to agree with the steep learning curve . I have been messing with a 3d program for a couple weeks now. Its like 1st grade all over again.

How long did it take you to learn to draw profiles ? Might take you as long!

Hmmm... in my case, I am not sure but it can't have been too long as I had deadlines to meet!
Having not done any 2D profile before apart from the attached low-res F-86 profile below, I took a bit of a risk in accepting a commission for 20+ profiles for this Japanese book. Sure enough I was never going to make it in time, so I engaged Kelcey's help and he did an absolute stunning job on the profiles I fowarded on to him - sacrificing some sleep and sanity in the process! Thanks again Kelcey, couldn't have done it without you!
I logged all my hours though and the first profile I did took 35 hours. Since it was accepted for publication, I guess you could say it took me 35 hours to learn how to do 2D profiles! But of course I wasn't new to Photoshop as I have spent a decade doing textures for both high and low-poly 3D vehicles.

As for 3D, you'd be surprised what a bit of dedication and a few good tutorials could produce in a few weeks time. In my view, if you have artistic skills they transfer relatively easily from paint to Photoshop to 3D software to photography to... heck... clay!

The quality difference between 2D and 3D profiles is why my work will remain a trifling hobby forever.

Really great work Skyraider. That closeup of the Ki-98 looks almost like the real thing.
