Tail Number
How is it that I can change the tail number within the aircraft.cfg file or within FS on the default FS aircraft. But some aircraft that I have download you need to change the tail number within the textures.
Is there a way that I can change the tail number within FS by modifying the aircraft files in some way? Which Files and how?
I am very new to repainting, so any help greatly appreciated.

Re: Tail Number
As I recall, the tail numbers can be typed in for the default models, they have a special font area in the model which allows the number to appear at a preset place.
For repaints, there is no access to the model to add this kind of area. So if one did not exist originally (such as with many third party aircraft), the tail numbers must be typed into the repaint texture itself.
Unfortunately, I am not aware of any way to modify the aircraft file itself for third party models.
I'll gather some information on how editing the tail numbers on a repaint might be most easily done, and post them.

Re: Tail Number
Ok, checked this out. Apparently the only way to add or edit a tail number on an existing repaint will be to go through the regular repaint process.
This linked tutorial outlines that process. It's not really 'easy' but will get the job done.

EDIT: Oh BTW, this tutorial is for FS9. You didn't mention which version of FS you are using, so if it's FSX there may be other steps involved which aren't covered in this tutorial.

Re: Tail Number
Thanks for the reply. It was most informative and answered my question.
BTW I have FS9.
(I have successfully done a repaint using DxtBMP and Gimp.)
