Forgot the file...here we go !!
Whiel working on the Viking I have been working on some oldies. This is one of the results: the F4D-1 Skyray. I have been wanting to do this bird for a while, but something always got in the way...but finially I had the time to get this jet jet down on paper...well almost !
What do you think ?

Looks good! I think you need to make the wing stick out from the fuselage more, which is easier said than done. Actually, your shading is good, but your overall lights and reflections need strengthening IMO.
Hmm..more wing issues :-)
I´m not sure that agree on this one though. The Skyrays intake and wing was merged so it was very hard to see where one ended and the other began...I do see your point, but do you think you coul dbe mopre specific ?
Thanks !
hi guys,
i am going to have the sam eproblem with my seahawk, so have fun,
here a couple of images to show the lighting effect.

Also some photos showing wing shadowing in our Gallery (once again, Serval--I absolutely hate the new navigation scheme compared to the old one.If I, as a poster, am having such a hard time finding photos there, just imagine the casual browser's task. Sure wish you could use the old sorting search scheme. Oh well, enough ranting).

Nice art, Mads![]()
I know this a/c is hard to draw, which is why I said it would be easier said than done. There are probably various ways to try to bring the wing out a bit, but I'm not sure which would be best:I´m not sure that agree on this one though. The Skyrays intake and wing was merged so it was very hard to see where one ended and the other began...I do see your point, but do you think you coul dbe mopre specific ?
1 - Try adding a highlight to the leading edge of the wing? Not much of an effect, granted, but shouldn't be too hard to add. See what it looks like.
2 - The whole wing and engine section should be reflecting more light, as is shown on Joe's first picture.
Here's a very quick attempt to show you what I mean:
It would need to be improved of course, but I think it does help a bit. Let me know what you think.
Also, I'm attaching the PSD file so you can see what I did. Sans titre-1.psd
As I said, what I did is just a general indication as I'm short on time. HTH.
Fantastic!!
Why not to add the undercarriage? I think aircraft look better "on ground"
Thanks for sharing your work.

Looking very nice, AP. Great subject too. Gotta love those early Navy jets!
I may have a solution for the wing for you. If you run a thin dark line along the top edge of the wing it will give you some definition and separate it from the fuselage behind. Adding a bit more highlight to the wing tip and outer leading edge also gives the viewer the impression that the tip is closer than the rest of the drawing. I'd add a bit more shading to the fuselage underside, too.
On a related issue, you have lovely soft shading around the nose and fuselage that really brings up the shape of the fuselage well and gives the impression of an overcast day. Then we get to the drop-tank. The image is hard and the shadows are crisp. It just doesn't fit with the rest of the drawing. Also, check out the thread about shadows on curved objects. Because your wing has sweep, I think the shadow should be curved over the drop tank.
I hope this helps!
Grubby.
