Only when I had begun to research the Po-2 and the IL-2 did I start to get some idea of the enormous extent of what the Russians call ‘The Great Patriotic War’. This is what persuaded me to profile these two aircraft which appeared to be the backbone of the Russian air forces when one takes into account how many were produced. No fighter or other bomber was produced in such numbers. Although over 30,000 had been produced I only found one complete working aircraft, although several others had been reconstructed from wrecks etc. but none so far as I could see, in fully operational condition. I would not recommend this aircraft as a starter to any wannabee profilers. Structurally the fuse was riveted as far back as the gunner, but from then on it was made of wood. I believe a large amount of wood was also incorporated into the wings, which meant that large holes could safely be made in them by 109’s etc ! rat.
