Thread: P-51D Mustang

    Re: P-51D Mustang

Ok seeing as this is a 'firsts' thread here's my first effort at a profile, took a lot lot longer than they do now and plenty of room for improvement, but was for my father who took his first flight in this one. Luckily the current owner has old log books and put me in touch with the pilot on that particular day so everyone was happy.

    Here is my first profile:

I think I have finished this Fw 190 in 1998.

The Ju 87 I have finished in 2001. Attached is the 2007 version to compare.

    Cheers,
Cool Simon! I hadn't noticed the thread on Military-meshes but I tend not to visit there as much anymore, the focus there is more on 3D work, which is logical given the name of the website, and people posting 2D work are much fewer. Recently we are even seeing more screenshot edits there in the 2D section which I am in doubt about, some decent edits but really the tricky parts all come from a videogame.

Cool to see the same plane then and now, I could do that with the mustang but really I don't want to invest the time to do that.

Blowhard: Respect that you even did this non-digitally! How cool!

GFR: That is why I have so much disk space! Never throw away anything, you will only miss it when it is gone

Inkworm: Even for a first profile that already looks quite good!

    GFR,

the serial on the P-47D-4 you are profiling was #42-22687, so 222687 appeared on the fin, not 22687. Great profile !

I've got to say these first profiles from everyone look pretty good!

That was the way it was done then. I wonder who was doing digital profiles in 1985-1986, if any one? Does anybody know who the digital profile art pioneers were?

    Of course you are right.

I was a little less attentive to detail in those days.

I wont make the same mistake again.

Not so sure about the last bit of your (or my) post.

The thought of getting something good enough to keep John happy on a 48k speccy is just too scary for me!

Interesting to find out what the first printed digital profile was and who did it. I know that things got much easier once Photoshop 5 brought in layers.

I know Sundin and Tullis were doing digital profiles before I had ever noticed, I thought they were just REALLY good with an airbrush! I'm sure there were earlier profiles though. Sundin's bio says he started doing profiles in 94, but did he start with digital?
Somehow I have a feeling that computer art wasn't ready for profiling until Photoshop 3 or 4. Or at least anything but simple graphic representations. Layers didn't show up until 94, and really, from what I remember, things were still pretty limited then. Remember how little memory those old computers had, and the hard drives were smaller than most of the smaller sized Photoshop files I have!
