A couple old 2D profiles from Japanese Secret Projects...

    Hi guys,

Here are a couple of 2D profiles I don't think I posted before. They're from the Japanese Secret Projects book and were done in 2008/2009.

These are perhaps not as exciting as my 3D profiles, but they are a lot quicker to produce. About 2-3 days opposed to 2-3 weeks... or months...

First the MXY6, which if I recall was my first 2D profile commissioned for print:

The MXY6 was pretty much a test bed and technology demonstrator for the J7W Shinden project. A few of them were built, some motorised, some gliders. This is one of the gliders, captured at Atsugi airbase after Japan's surrender. The cone at the end of the fuselage therefore isn't a propeller spinner, but a flattened triangular shape. I hope my shading represents this as such.

Secondly a flimsy contraption called the Ta-Go. This was basically a low-tech special attack (read: suicide) aircraft, built of non-strategic materials, which could be built by low-skilled labour. It's almost post-apocalyptic in design!

There were no accurate scale drawings for either aircraft (those that did exist had serious faults), so I had to reconstruct these from the few photos that exist and a handful of known dimensions. A fun exercise and I'm fairly confident the result is close to reality.

If you have the Japanese Secret Projects book, then you'll find these look quite different in print. The reason is a faulty CMYK/RGB conversion of the files I supplied. Quite frustrating, having spent many hours pouring over colour photos trying to come up with accurate colours. All profiles in the book are basically blue.

For a current project I'm still undecided whether to go the 2D or 3D route. I do prefer 3D, but the time investment is just huge.

    Cheers,

    Ronnie

They actually have some pretty good highlights and shadows The underwing area on the first one looks especially nice! If you ever get tired of this 3D stuff you can always revert back to the forces of light (2D )

Am I the only artist that wishes paper was neutral grey in colour. I agree with Supah, very nice treatment of the under wing surface.

Ronnie, amazing work! The lights and shadows are great and as Supah wrote, the underwing area is work of a real master.
