If the plane is low then fuel consumption is higher and the exhaust trails are good. If still climbing below 10k feet, the maybe also the landing lights would also still be on.
If the plane is high, fuel consumption has dropped off, and contrails will show up as you go higher. But up there you don't climb as steeply.
