"Corky IV/Jawona"
P-38J-15 serial #Unknown. Flown by Capt. Cornelius "Corky" Smith 80thFS 8thFG, Nadzab, April of 1944. Smith gained his 11th, and final, victory (an Oscar) over Hollandia on the 12th of April 1944, and was rotated home the following month after completeing 169 missions. As his last P-38, Smiths Corky IV/Jawona is finished in a scheme indicative of the colors and markings worn by the 80thFS from spring 1944 untill war's end. Green had always been the squadrons identification color within the 8thFG, and Smith had ensured that his personal markings (including the rudder stripes, which identified him as an old veteran to newer pilots) were applied in a compatible shade.
