I found osme video's about the way new years eve is spend in the town I grew up.
There are more towns where this kind of shooting is done, but all of them attach the barrel somewhere and use electric ignition.
Here it's done by your own weight and putting the feet firmly against the floor and bottom of the barrel.
The ignition is holding a lighter to a little hole in the bottom. The explosive gas is made with a mixture of carbide and water.

Well that's new to me! Are the barrels ever worn out from this, or is the explosion not that strong?

Yes, the explosion is strong.
Though people in town know the dangers quite well, deadly accidents have happened a few times.
You should use steel barrels and watch the bottom especially. I have seen barrels where the bottom was blown out.
