    Re: Site Transformation?

Quickly gave up on line drawings as a primary source of a profile when I drew a DC-3 that was a metre too short. I always work off photographs, taken with a long lens to minimise perpective. Usually look for four pictures - square to the cockpit, square the engines, square to the wing and square to the tailplane.

One photo, usually the one square to the wing, becomes sets the proportions of the engines. As a result, my profiles are not side elevation "engineering" drawings but have a little bit of perspective and a little artistic licence. They would never do as a definitive study of a DC-6, for instance.

I'll agree with you that using existent scale plans is risky - I've dropped a few templates after realizing they contained a big mistake that I hadn't noticed at first. On the other hand, I'm very bad at drawing them myself, so I prefer using plans and then confronting them to pictures from walkarounds (which is also risky due to restorations/mods).

No you are not the only addict.. I remember when drawing a B-17 I was counting the rivets on photos.. and believe me there is a LOT of rivets on such a B-17. And it troubles me also when I know that in that or other section the rivets are not that correct because I dont have a proper photo. I draw in 1/16 scale, where I can add really many details, which will disappear later when painted and scaled down to an A4 or less. At this size many times you cant tell if it is a screw or a rivet. It is again only me who knows the difference, also as I know that I have turned each screw into different position
To the gear/prop question: I usually draw with gear up and prop shown, as it was suggested by my first publisher. I dont like drawing gear, but I do it when requested (with a lot of cursing ) as I dont paint it, I only prepare drawings for others.

Well, when I wrote that, I didn't know you'd be reading it. EDIT: Nobody would notice, except Zamex who would feel sick about such a lack of professionalism.

That's because you're on the (seriously) dark side of the force, Zamex.
