Listen to Grubby. Perfection guaranteed every time. If not, yer kinda stuck with thick black lines for brake lines, hoses, electrical wiring etc. Illustrator is called Illustrator for a reason. You truly create something from nothing. Photoshop is the primo king of all image MANIPULATION programs. In and of itself it can't really do the job properly. Combine the two and you can truly kill....as Grubby has so amply demonstrated in his Sabre illo.

i hate illustrator, i can't get it to do it, can't even draw with it, do one line and start the next and the first line disappears.

    Re: Brake pipes

I wrote a short tutorial about doing this in GIMP. Works similar in my Photoshop elements (though it does not offer paths, only stroking selections).

    hi all,

i might be thick, but using good old british ingenuity i found a way of doing it, draw my shape, go to effects browser, select edge, and then use either "find all" or "trace" both give the same thing, parallel brake pipes.

    Re: Brake pipes

OK JM....just relax and take a deep breath. Illustrator works slightly different from Photoshop. First of all, if you draw a line with the pen tool and then start another without closing it, Illustrator thinks you screwed up the first one so it erases it and starts a new path. You MUST deselect the first path before starting another one. Parallel lines on curved surfaces are a snap. Draw the line in a width that is close to what you want in the finished path. Correct any curves or misjoints BEFORE you go to the next step or it will be a lot harder to correct mistakes. With the line still selected, go to object>paths>outline stroke. Illustrator will trace the outline perfectly. Now all you need to do is choose your fill (it can be none if you wish) and the line weight for the outline stroke. The attached shows you the results of this process. If you have any problems with it, contact me via MSN Live! or Yahoo Instant Messenger and I'll walk you through it.
