    New Ki-61-II profiles and WIP

    It's been awhile

I went back and created the early production Ki-61-II in the markings of the 17th Hiko Sentai just to give it some character.

You will see the Standard production example I first did and the new Early Production example that's a WIP.

As you can see, much is needed to be done even though I did quite a bit already. I guess profiles are never completed!

39 of these machines of both Early and Standard production very well likely made it to Chutai level in some units, namely the 56th Hiko Sentai.

    Comments always welcome

Those look pretty nice Hawk. But isn't that green a little washed out? When they specify "Dark Green" they usually mean dark green The other colors look nice and strong.
Check your shading on the spinner. I think it could look a lot more round.
What is next? Please do a nice natural metal one and one with field applied camouflage!!!

Re: New Ki-61-II profiles and WIP

Thanks for the complements all! It's really much appreciated!!

Blowhard, your right, it's kinda washed out (and good call!) as I'm still working the shadows and highlights. Several layers for the highlights for the Tear drop version have been deleted and replaced with new ones for this fastback version. So yeah I still need to do some adjusting there! I didnt see the differences until after I posted both versions. More work to do! Will also check to see about that nose as well.

The Green Army color is Ohryoku 7 Go-shoku which is a Dark Olive/Brownish color and should turn out better once I get the highlights adjusted correctly.

Over at J-aircraft.com, I talked with Jim about these late model examples and he found some interesting info about these planes. An educated guess is that a possible 38 complete machines with the Ha-140 engine made it to Chutai level for use namely the 56th Hiko Sentai.

Sadly, nearly all these late model Ki-61-II Kai machines were painted in Ohryoku 7 Go-shoku Dark Olive with the exception of a few pre-production Ki-61-II examples from what I understand.

However, I just may create a Ki-61-I Tei someday so I can make some Bare metal Ki-61's

First, let me confess that I don't know much about these planes!

Having said that, the wing root at the leading edge of the wing looks like it goes straight into the fuselage with no fillet. However, the trailing edge shows a rather largish fillet smoothing the joint between wing and fuselage.

Whoa! Good catch! I do see what you mean and there should be a small highlight reflection there! On this plane, the front panel that used to be separate parts on the earlier versions is now a one piece on the Ki-61-II's.

I'll need to play with it some more, but here is a detailed screenie of where I am now with this. I'm not 100% satisfied with this, but better than before.

    Opinions everyone?

Well I'm back from my vacation now. Since I do not see any replies, I'll assume this change is good as it is.
