Re: New Ki-61-II profiles and WIP

Absolutely delicious! Very nice, Jadehawk. Your attention to detail on the weathering is great. I'll have to pick your brains for my Mustangs.

I think you need to "bend" the hinomaru (?) under the wing a bit. It looks like a flat ellipse at the moment and that is making the lower wing surface look flat. A bit of curvature will give shape to the underside. I reckon the shding around the top of the wing tip is working aganst you too, it gives the impression that the wing tip is sunk into the side of the fuselage! Maybe run the shading on the wingtip, rather than on the fuselage?

The matt of the paint is really convincing. It looks like a super-flat finish. I'm not getting a feel of the curve along the top of the fuselage though. Maybe ore highlight, or a shaded top edge?

At any rate, it's outstanding work, Jadehawk.

    Graeme.

    hi jadehawk,

well took me a while but it came to me in the end, the rivets are backwards, in the close up you can see what i mean, they look like holes, shadows and highlights are in the wrong place, should be the other way round.

    apart from that, beautifull

Re: New Ki-61-II profiles and WIP

Jesters, Thanks and I'll get a final soon, so hang on Just need to complete some minor things and also do a Bare Metal (Gasp!) one then I'll all set.

    Grubby, Thanks first of all
I do see what you mean about the Hinomaru, but changing a circle on that much of a flat, but curved surface will be difficult. However, I'm gonna give it a try and see what happens. As for the weathering, ask away and I'll do my best to fill you in.

    JMSmith, thanks for the complements!

I'll show you why I did not do the rivets as you suggested. To me, as you can see, changing the highlights and shadows like you said gives the appearance of raised rivets which this airplane did not have. Also, looking closely at photographs of a real Ki-61 going under restoration shows the rivets are almost flush with the skin, but really slightly recessed into the skin.

Below is a 1:1 scale screenie that shows what I'm talking about. In the Red box, you will see both the way I did them and also the reversed as you suggested. To me, they look raised.

This is due to the way flush rivets behave when used this way. Had this Ki-61 be in bare metal, these rivets as they are would work much better and in hindsight, I could have left my original rivets much lighter than what they are shown here. But for printing reasons, I left them darker for that purpose, so they give a hint on the final print.

Finally, I want to say THANKS all for any and all your help and the criticizing of my work really helps me in the long run and try to see things how others see it. Because of this, I believe it helps me make better profiles in the end. So THANKS FELLAS and keep em coming too.

One thing you can do to distort the Hinomaru is play with the "spherisation" filter, or any similar one (that's what I have in PS7). It's a bit difficult to do a first but once you get used to it, you can add just a tiny bit of distorsion which looks just right. HTH.

    hi jadehawk,

now i see why you did it that way, there is another way to show recessed rivets, i will post one for you later.

the flat circle is dead easy to curve, use the warp grid and jut gently pull the centre down, but only by a very small margin.

    hi jadehawk,

here you go, i made these and saved them into "picture tube" then i just size them to whatever i need,
first is the rivet on a green background, below it is how it looks on white, same with screws, and a sloping surface screw, and two types of panel lines.

as you say these rivets will not show up very well when printed

Re: New Ki-61-II profiles and WIP

Again thanks fellas, Apologies for the late reply as well. But been a busy fella the last week and just getting around to all this again. All good stuff John and your rivet it basically the same as mine. Just I have an outline and some highlight and shadows. I could do my Dutz (sp) fasteners like yours, but it all boils down to print ability which sucks unless your print is 8 feet long and 4 feet wide!

You guys are great at critiquing my work and I'm very much appreciated in that regard. Thanks again

    OK!

Here is the latest version with all the changes to date. Hinomaru now conforms to the lower wing and shown is markings for the 17th Hiko Sentai.

    This better?

Blated thanks Been away with my kids and just now saw this. It's nice there are people out there who appreciate all the hard work that's gone into everyone's profiles.
