Good start Gaëtan! Always felt this was the prettiest of the P-40 family![]()
And yet another WIP:
I'm part of the French Wing of the Commemorative AF and the president absolutely loves the P-40 so this should make him happy.
He might also ask me to make a couple hundred so we can make a book.
Comments/criticism are welcome. Note that I'm working in an unusual way, doing bits and pieces here instead of my usual "layered" building.
Gataen,
niiiiice. You have good plans. here is one I did last year. The only thing I can say is thankfully I have improved since. The shading on yours is excellent. Looking forward to final product,
MC
It's looking like a great start. I can't wait to see it with all the details and weathering in place!![]()

Another cool tree McI notice you've got the correct (but almost always missed) blue underwing lettering. Nice one!
FAST AND BULBOUS!
Small update:
Funny. I also wondered about that. It might be worth converting it into the P-36/Hawk 75 later on. I guess I need to look into it some more.I'm already wondering how much of this could be re-used for (French) Hawk 75 profiles.
Mc & BH: thanks for the pointer. I'll look into that. I never noticed it was supposed to be blue. Same blue as the roundel I imagine?I notice you've got the correct (but almost always missed) blue underwing lettering. Nice one!
AFAIK, yes, the same Insignia Blue as the roundel and/or stars and bars. They may have changed to black letters sometime in the war but the earlier stuff, 41-42, maybe later, seem to be blue. I know the early P-39s in the PTO had blue lettering at least.
FAST AND BULBOUS!
For this this timeframe, definately blue,
MC
Thx BH and Mc. You learn something everyday.
Forgot to answer...Care to elaborate on this?
Im curious as to the meaning of "bits and pieces."
I usually start by shading the entire plane, then adding the highlights. Then I'll do the lines, rivets, etc... Here I started with the spinner, shaped it, "lined" it and give it rivets... Instead of doing it in layers that cover the whole aircraft, I'm doing sections only... For example, I usually would not have added the exhaust pipes and cockpit fillings and small details like that until late in the drawing.
Don't know if I'm clear? Basically, I'm disorganized...![]()
