Re: 2.5D profile: Oka 22 kamikaze thingy

Ronnie, yer really starting to irritate me. Every time I've started research on a wierd aircraft, you pop in with the finished product. Do you intend to leave anything for the rest of us to do? Brilliant work BTW.

Well that was the thing with this project... it was underpaid - and even so I underquoted myself. But it was fun and good exposure as the commissioned artists got space for an ad in the back of the book
Often it's the author who pays and he gets the funding from the illustration budget of his books. As aviation books have a seriously small market (typically no more than 2000 copies of a title) and the book shops and publishers take the biggest chunk of profits, you can appreciate the authors aren't particularly swimming in money either. So for a good deal it's a labour of love, often a balance between the maximum the author is willing and able afford and the minimum that makes it worthwhile.

If only that were true! If you stick to famous British aircraft it's very likely our paths won't cross. Or Dutch aircraft for that matter! Despite being Dutch, I have never done a Dutch aircraft!

Ron, you know I'm a Luftwaffe nut. Thank god I don't do Jap aircraft or you really would be driving me insane! As it was, the Natter had me foaming at the mouth.

    Hello Ronnie,

My experience is that the work of a (plane)-illustrator is not paid fairly.
Too many illustrators selling their work for an apple and an egg.

Make them so the prices down for himself and other designers.

    Greetings
    Heli

Re: 2.5D profile: Oka 22 kamikaze thingy

    Hi Heli, hi folks!

I think this would be an interesting thread in the general discussion section.

We all know that we are far underpayed in our business.

Purchasers at my business (architects office) have to pay 80 Euros for one man hour. I’m sure most of us need more then one hour to finish a profile.

Ronny wrote that he needed 2,5 hours to finish his rocket. I’m 1000% sure you didn’t get 200 Euros for this single rocket, and I’m also sure no one of us ever will get such fees for a single profile.

After finishing many profiles for different publishing houses I have an idea what they pay. And you can be sure that the fees will go down in future. The competition is getting harder, because there are so many artists out there.

Best what can happen is to get a job to finish many same planes with just different markings. That’s the way to earn money, but not if you have to do many different plane types just a single time.

For me drawing profiles is just a hobby and I’m doing this for pure idealism. That’s really fine, as you can choose if you want to do a job or not. Never ever I want to live from that business.

    Cheers,
    Luftwaffe Aviation Art

    Hi Simon,

    I see it that way.

With the drawing of a profile can not win a "flowerpot"!!!
    I'm also just for fun.

With my racing bike out into nature that is better...
for me and my sensitive body ;-)

    Greetings!

Or convince many people that they all want the same type

A few good contacts seem to help and it pays the bills somehow for me.

    Sad but true Simon.
There are jobs that are paid for sitting at chair doing nothing. And the ones, were the result brings joy and memories alive, as ours profiling, is deeply underpaid....
But from time to time, drops of money are a bit stimulating as well although the joy of putting LW types (and not only those) here on forum and seeing comments is the biggest thrill of profiling
