    Re: Me Bf109 G8 Bärwolf - part 2

The MG-bulge of the Bf 109 G-Series is not higher than the engine cowling.
Interesting comment. After reading it, I looked into it some more (I spent the afternoon reading more about the Gustav). It seems that the beulen are often oversized on plans and profiles, but I think they did go a tiny bit higher than the engine cowling.

At first, I wasn't sure because of the perspective on the pictures I found. However, I just found this picture of a G-5:

I'd say that they were a little higher (really no much), but I'm interested in everyone else's opinion on the matter.

John, where's yer calipers and stuff?

I agree. There is not much in it but they do appear to be slightly higher.

The real interesting thing (to me anyway) about the above images is how matte the paint is, even in full sunlight,

There is a message for all of us there.

Seeing all these great images, the itch to do a 109 is getting really annoying now.

    Hello boys,

The photos are taken the side photographed from below.
    The MG-bulge looks higher.

Here I have a realistic perspective.

Quite matte in the above shots but on the other hand I have also seen extreme cases of a glossy quality to the surface of Luftwaffe aircraft. The new fresh paint was quite shiny especially earlier in the war. Many Bf109Es tended to have a shinier surface than say the Gs. I suppose it depends on how old the airframe is and what theatre. For instance aircraft serving in the Med/Africa would lose the lustre quite quickly. Also dependant on whether the surfaces were polished. The benefits of which could be a couple of MPH in speed. Some photos also show a distinct difference in surface shine when comparing the fuselage codes to the surrounding camouflage paint. The codes were often slightly shinier. It's another case of check your ref photos for how glossy the aircraft looked as there are no rules for this one.

I share the same opinion as Clint. There is no particular rule why that plane is matt or have a shinier surface. All depend of paint quality, weather, operational level of the aircraft, etc....With aircraft profile, you can feel free to manage your shinning level, if it's based on historical photos.
