Interesting comment. After reading it, I looked into it some more (I spent the afternoon reading more about the Gustav). It seems that the beulen are often oversized on plans and profiles, but I think they did go a tiny bit higher than the engine cowling.The MG-bulge of the Bf 109 G-Series is not higher than the engine cowling.
At first, I wasn't sure because of the perspective on the pictures I found. However, I just found this picture of a G-5:
I'd say that they were a little higher (really no much), but I'm interested in everyone else's opinion on the matter.
