    Re: Sopwith Camel

Yes the roundel is to garish and not round. Somebody else said on another forum the same. Never occurred to me about the guns! Just thought I would grunge overall. But as you rightly pointed out, the guns would have been looked after. Might be a while due to time constrictions, but I will try and do a few corrections and get back with this. Meantime, if anyone else feels they have some useful critique, then please contribute. Steep learning curve this hobby I think?

    Just kidding.

Very nice first attempt, Butts. I'm not shocked by the looks of the ribbing but I'm no WW1 aircraft expert. I think your next step might be refining the textures (2D!!!) to give it a more natural look. Keep us posted!

Lay off on the colors guys, the textures are done differently. That's the real problem here Butts. You need to work on getting all your textures so that match and work together. You've got some Mark Miller-like textures on parts of your plane, like the tail and cowling but other parts are almost flat solid colors like the roundel. That's what makes that roundel look off. The colors on the rudder flash are better. Match those up and it will look much better. The Vickers MG should be almost black too.

As for accuracy, let me have a look when I get home. I do suspect the airfoil shape is too flat on the bottom of the lower wing but I could be wrong. The propeller looks pretty off too.

About the roundel not being round, I believe those were painted with large masks. At least I'm pretty sure I've see photos of this. I have a feeling they would be pretty round and well painted.

Fun project so far, I always like seeing more WW1 stuff!!!

Speaking of Mark Miller, have you looked over his Camel 3D? His stuff is pretty accurate.
    Mark Miller's 3-D Nieuport
I love his work but for my 2 cents I think his textures are a little too textured

(Edit) I forgot to mention you should check the number of spokes, I think you've got too many.

    Butts,

Nice work. I'm currently trying to make the transition from 2D to 3D using 3DS Max. What a dark art ! I thought I could do it in one year, however that was waaaaaaaaay too ambitious - I now give myself two. So, I bow to anyone who has attained your level in 3D. I'm curious - for rendering did you use standard daylight lighting or Vray?

Thanks for the references Blowhard. All good critique. The prop may well be a little of, as I think due to lack of close up references, I kinda guessed it.

Mr Mclaring: I have posted an image of the blender setup. I havent used the new cycles renderer (is on the list), instead the Blender internal which is faster. There are four lights. A mixture of area and sun lamps with only the one sun casting shadows and specular. Very crude simulation of what I would consider some kind of all round light illumination that I suppose would be caused by light scattering due to the the atmosphere. And some tweaking in Gimp! 2D!

    Thanks All.

Yes I have viewed them. As you read this, I have my virtual 3d wood plane taking pixels of my present prop. Many thanks.
