I don't now about others but I just take my brush opacity down to 1 or 2% soften it as much as possible, add a bit of spacing and gradually build it up where required.

You'll get it and soon wonder what the problem was

I just make a selection of roughly the shape of highlight I want, feather it appropriatly and fill with white. The I mess with the opacity a bit. All on a touchpad for Chris's enjoyment.

Thanks to Inky & Supah for your insights...I go with the low white opacity; and have been using the pen tool cum brush to do longditudinal highlighting -but find the low-opacity buildup is best for subtle curvature.

Here is Lloyd Chadburn's EP548 - I've gotten a little closer to the subtlety I'm aiming for...

    Christmas cheers from Atlantic Canada..

    Looks good Pakka

Being from Oshawa originally myself. I always enjoying seeing anything related to LLoyd Chadburn.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    Cheers,

Thanks for your comments Ed - your Electra is especially nice: very suitable atmospherics.
Being a modeler, I've done quite a few digital montages using mine & others models. I'll try to get 'round to posting some...

Thanks Pakka and you're very welcome.

I too am a modeller although I'm currently doing some armour at the moment but when I need a break from that I like to do up these skins for IL-2 1946 aircraft. Like they say a change is as good as a rest from time to time.

I'll definitely be looking forward to seeing your montages

    Cheers,

Ed - with your riffs on the Electra I began to think you might be interested in the L-12. I did these almost 3 years ago and have never upgraded them. They are a bit crude in a non-threatening way I admit. The original lines came from an old Air Progress (Mar. '63) [my high-school years].

Me. I come at it from the other direction by painting a solid line of white then experiment with Gaussian blurs, opacity, masks and multiple layers until I achieve the desired (for a while anyways) results.

Ink as we have discussed here on many occasions, there are a multitude of ways to skin a cat in this game, and when you arrive at what works for you as you say " You'll get it and soon wonder what the problem was."

Pakka has completed the easy part of this venture nicely. The hard part is always bring these things to life, and that is only ever a matter of trial, error and oodles of patience.

It's interesting seeing others approach the same issue, though Supah is just being weird! (Always did wonder how you managed the brush strokes with the pad and now I know... you just don't bother!)

I suppose coming from a fine art background I'm used to working with brushes and slowly building up the effect I want so it's natural (WITH A TABLET ) to carry that method over digitally.

Might try the other way though, it's better than going to the dark side and doing some 3d stuff.

    Re: RCAF Spitfire Vb

    Thanks for the pics Pakka.

I'll certainly make use of them once we get the L-12 into the game. I could possibly use the L-10 we have in the game now but don't think that would do these pics justice. As for the Super Electra that may definitely be do able.

    Thanks again for these.

    Cheers,
    Ed
