Re: General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon

    Gaetan Marie,

Just visited your site. Why do you need a more powerful computer? You do beautiful work with the one you have. When I started doing profiles last year I was using a computer bought last century and still running on Windows 98 and 256Mb of RAM. Then my son bought a more powerful gaming computer and I got his discarded one - with Windows XP professional and a Gb of RAM. By then I had locked in to a 3000px image width.

Printing? Do you all print your images or do they remain digital? Every profile I do I print as an A4 image. Use the printer software to reduce the image size to fit the medium, so I retain all the pixels. Printer is a Canon Pixma iP6700D, six-colour (9600X2400dpi) bought specifically for the job. Print on Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy. Was using the Canon's high gloss professional paper but it was too expensive and the rendition of metal looks better on the cheaper paper. Have yet to replace an ink cartridge despite printing 50 images. Must be getting close, at least for the black. It is also my everyday regular printer.

NUCE SUPAH! I think this is your best ever!

F-16 is 10.000 pixels across and is currently 359 MB
I feel your pain The Zeros I'm working on are 250+ MB each. My computer doesn't like the files at all, especially saving!
Something interesting I came across recently; according to Adobe, Photoshop CS can access only 2 GB RAM. Anything more than that is isn't used by PS. Or at least for Mac OSX. I think that includes all versions of CS, they don't seem to list specs for individual versions of CS.
From what I've read, the clock speed of the processor and disc space, LOTS of FAST disc space are the only things that will really speed up PS.

Re: General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon

@anadc4: Thanks for the kind comments. I won't go clubbing old ladies, don't worry. It's true I can manage with what I have. I initially had 256 megs (-40some for the graphics card) and it was much more of a problem then. I added another 256 bar (is that what you say in English?) and the improvement was remarkable. But for bigger airplanes, I'd like to have bigger files to make details easier to draw. It's not much of a problem for the I-16, for sure.

@Blowhard: Thanks for the link, I've tried adding scratch disk space. As I regularly get the "Windows is created additional virtual memory" stuff, I think it should help.

@Supah: why are you still here reading our stuff? You should be doing more of those beautiful F-16s! Get back to work! lol... The Falcon is one of my favourites (in case you hadn't noticed).

That PS info is nice I was about to buy more ram, I've got 2 GB right now. I wanted to know how much to get to speed up my work. After reading that I realized it wouldn't matter to PS even if I got more ram
I did do a few tweaks to my settings, for instance; I had my scratch disc set to a secondary HD. Adobe says it's faster to use your OS HD as your primary scratch disc. I squeezed a little more speed out of PS, it isn't much but it is noticeable

Re: General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon

I configured my machine for an extra 50% scratch disk size but I haven't yet tried using PS with that configuration. I could probably be OK with the RAM I have, but I tend to open lots of other documents for reference (lighting, panels, riveting, etc...) and this is when the machine starts writing nasty things like "I'll corrupt your file and crash if you keep up with this" or "this is it. I'm going back to my maker"... lol

I have 6 x 500 GB S-ATA II in this machine so I have a couple of disks set as scratch disks. Speed is doable anyway so I just need it to escape the "Could not perform request because the scratch disks are full" Message. Most of my profiles can be printed at A3 or larger. They are sold via AviationGraphic.com - Homepage

    Hi Supah,
I've only just caught up with this thread, (I've had my head in Google for two days doing NSCA research for some Bell choppers) This is really sweet. You are left in no doubt as to the shape and what is infront of what. Well done!
    Grubby.
