All down to luck, right place at the right time (whilst the other side are at lunch) and Bobs your Auntie. lololololol
That was one of Monogram's best kits. Made up into one sweet looking plane. The poor old Devastator was a sitting duck for the Zeros and they were shredded at Coral Sea and Midway. Wonder if it would have done better in the North Atlantic or Mediterranean. The even more dated Swordfish did great things in those theatres.
Hard to tell. I have a book about "first fights" and that shows that the first fight was often enough different from the final reputation the aircraft finally got. It also shows how different the same aircraft could perform in hands of different countries and thus by using different tactics.
And to name an aircraft somewhat similar to the Devastator, the DB-8A-3N's were almost all ripped to pieces over the Netherlands within a couple of hours. Tactics also were part in this disaster. Since they were lacking bombs (still not delivered by the US) they were used as heavy fighter.
My feeling is that aircraft like the Swordfish has some advantages over the faster and modern fighters which a design like the Devastator was lacking. And such advantages (if well used) can make up for the lack of speed.
