Yes, a telescopic sight. I believe they used the for long range identification, but not for long range shooting.
I was lucky to find that the San Diego Air & Space museum updated a lot of their images on Flicker with high res copies. They have two of the red and yellow striped Schlasta 21 plane. GOOD BIG PHOTOS with enough detail to see everything I was missing before. Here's my revision of this plane-

I was really blown away to find that the plane was previous marked with the units typical black/white horizontal stripes and that they could still be seen under the red/yellow stripes. You can even see the serial number on the tail! What is that written on the center of the fuselage?
This plane, CL.II 5720/17 was flown by Uffz. Niemann and Vzfw Rudolf Kolodzicj, Habay La Vielle aerodrome in October 1918.
