How about if insignia was applied before squadron markings???
Although I have seen reference to the white of the insignia being grayed out, I don't seem to be able to find it right now. I pretty much agree with all of the above and unless I have photographic evidence to the contrary, If its called for I generally try to illustrate the insignia looking dirty not a solid gray.
Love the grime.
Nice picts of Mr Ted III BTW. I didn't have those in the collection, until now.
I see another diversion in my near future.
How about if insignia was applied before squadron markings???
I think both greyed-out and simply dirty versions existed. As for mud/grass fields, they were some (especially ALGs) but keep in mind that there were many 8th AF airfields in the UK that were hardened and "clean".I wonder if it is dirty, the ground crew cleans the planes up as well as service them, the insignia would be a rather flat paint and would hold the dirt if the rest of the surface was rubbed out..... the fields were grass and mud, late 44 and early 45 was very wet. I do not think they would gray the markings out on a NMF and Yellow craft.....there has to be another answer. If you look at these examples you will see the insignia is discolored unevenly. ( photos from Jeff ethell catalog and ebay)
And even on a dirty runway or taxiway, would mud really have splashed as high as the insignia? It seems like a long shot. Exhaust smoke staining seems right, but I'm not sure about any mud.
Is anybody able to shed any light on the use of RAF Dark Green on USAAF Mustangs? The number of references that I have seen to its use of late is starting to do my head in.
I have a version of LOU IV with it but I'm neither sure of its accuracy or more importantly whether I like it or not.![]()

Can we get a detail shot?

FAST AND BULBOUS!
Its apparent that I have a like (not love) hate relationship with this profile and I suspect that I will be working on it right up until the arrival of the apocalypse.
Anyway here is the latest version. I think I have pretty much all bases covered when it comes to this template. I actually dont care for having the undercarriage down in my work but I did this for an earlier version and thought I may as well put it out there. If need be I'll finish it sometime.
BTW. I did finish the Bottisham four and four different Ferocious Frankie's before I decided that the template needed yet another re-working.
Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to do my 100th version of Old Crow, perhaps this one will see the light of day.

WOW GFR!
These are amzing! Would be interesting how you have done the rotating propeller? In the flying condition with the rotating spinner and blades I would not show the shadow of the propeller balde you have done in the stationary position.
Cheers,
I'm such a silly moo, I forgot to turn off the shadow layer on the spinner.
As for the props and spinner, being my first attempt at a moving prop it took a little experimentation, but in the end its a pretty simple technique. Its just a combinations of two or three masked layers set at various levels of opacity with Motion/Gaussian blurs. The outer yellow was just a thin scattered brush hit with a motion blur. Same goes for the spinner minus the yellow.
Pretty happy with the result even if like the undercarriage, I never use it.
