This was of course just a quick test and needs lots of extra work, but I think with a better picture, some adjustments and grain, it would look rather good. Any suggestions or opinions?

Comparing the photos with your profile (which looks great, by the way), maybe you should darken the lowlights some more? It'd also be neat if you could find an easy way of warping the shine around panel lines, rivets, etc.
And then tell us how you did it.

One question, is the intent to do a polished plane? If so, yes, to show gloss you need strong darks.
But really, I think the bare metal version is superb as is the final OD version!

IMHO it would look more aggressive with the engine cowling deflectors (?) in open mode. See the first of the two pictures I posted.

Thanks for the positive comments, guys! As I said, this was literally done over coffee and I didn't expect such feedback. Basically what I did was look for a large suitable pic of a landscape, and just pasted it on top of the original camo. After that, I did the same thing for the engine.

Having had "proof of concept", I was wondering about the "warping" part (spot on, Jarink!). After having tested it, I erased the layer in question, so I can't show any close-ups. But I'll work on it again later (I have a few further ideas I have to test) and post when ready.

The pictures you uploaded are useful indeed Ugo, and I'll save them for future reference. Thanks! I'll also consider opening up the cowling.

The only downside is that I generally don't do aircraft that are so highly polished. However, it has became a question of pride: a challenge to be solved.

I prefer my warbirds to look as operational as possible, I doubt the planes were kept THAT clean during the war.
