Re: Hi New Here! Pls take a look?

Good rivet test. Upper shadow is a bit too pronounced. John, would you please stop kicking my a?? and proving me wrong with that giant, industrial sized encyclopedia of yours. No human being should ever be given the power of protractors and compasses combined with an enormous library. It's inhumane. How do you think Clint will feel when you drag out your armada?

Re: Hi New Here! Pls take a look?

hi clint, those are far better rivets, well done,

as otter says, play with them until you get the correct look, its all based on shadows and reflections, you don't actually see a rivet, just where it is, and the deformed metal around it

    otter,

get on with your work, i know you have plenty to do

Re: Hi New Here! Pls take a look?

Did I miss something, or is this post advancing very fast?

Welcome, Clint. Your work is very good for a third attempt and I hope you will find inspiration to continue on this forum.

With your permission, I'd like to quickly hijack your thread to slap John on the back of the hands:

Not to curve the shadow but to keep it straight on a curved surface, but hey i am on my own here technically my way is correct, but artistically a gentle curve looks nice, so make your own choice.
Sorry. Technically your way is not correct. The shadow will be curved or not, depending on the sweep of the object creating the shadow. Check with Joe about this. He made a few test with pictures to prove it.

Done. Sorry about the hijacking but you will soon learn that one doesn't get that many opportunities to prove John wrong. As Otter points out, the man has way too much material under his elbow. He just can't control so much power.

Concerning your 189, I don't have many comments, aside from what has already been said. One of the most common beginner mistake is not to put enough lighting/shading. The more you use it, the better the shapes are defined.

    Keep us posted,

I'd like to echo everybody's welcome. Your 189 is an exception start to your profiling endeavors, keep up the good work.

One minor thing I need to mention, is that to my eye your white camo looks like it is moving without the aircraft. did you use a horizontal motion blur? Perhaps a Gaussian blur might slow it down a bit.

Re: Hi New Here! Pls take a look?

Thanks Gents, Otter I will adjust the rivets, I've got a couple of ideas.

Just this thread will help me massively, your already helping me focus on certain areas that need slight attention. No doubt it will improve my profiles. I will have to wait a couple of days to actually amend my profile as I have been challenged to a draw off. Basically I showed my friends older brother a print of my profile and he said yeah its good but you did it on a computer. He is not into computers at all and he seems to think that somehow any artwork created on a computer is done solely by the computer and the operator has no artistic talent. So after much debate and after me trying to explain what I actually have to do to create them, he challenged me to a drawing contest. So I'm gonna break out the pencils and create a nice pencil drawing to woop his ass with then I can crack on with my profile. Shame I would prefer to be doing my profile but if I dont I will never hear the end of it. It must be done.

    Thanks
    Clint

    Hi GFR

After posting the Winter camo, I began to dislike it and decided to redo it at a later point hence the reason why it was not posted here, I know what you mean about the motion. That is actually on the dirt layer above the white which looks good on the normal profile but crap on the winter one, so after I have done all of the changes to the summer camo profile I will start work again redoing the white paint.

    Thanks

Re: Hi New Here! Pls take a look?

    Welcome Clint! Very nice work.

Just a quick comment on the shadows on curved surfaces. Since the site went belly up, I'll repeat the simple shadow photos I had posted . This was a simple mailing tube "fuselage" with three card "wings" to illustrate the effect of wing sweep on shadow effects. The sun was at the 2:00 position, high and to the right of the picture. You see that the shadow cast by the forward-swept wing on the right and the aft-swept wing on the left are curved--in different directions. The shadow cast by the unswept wing in the middle results in a straight line. These effects can be confirmed with a 3-D program.

An easy way to remember this is to imagine the wing shadow as a solid body extending below the wing. Then you can visualize the solid body intersecting the "sausage" fuselage and the intersection line is the shadow line on the fuselage.

All this applies to the "traditional" profile work with sun above and forward of the subject. Some on this site use the sun directly abeam the subject--that's another matter.

Glad you're joining us--these guys are really, really good!

    Clint,

go here to try to understand about the above,

profile artists work to two sets of rules, so it gets very confusing
