Re: Hi New Here! Pls take a look?

Rat, I can see my hand and face in the mirror at the same time. Why would shaving even compare? The most comfortable position to draw in is either on a flat or slightly tipped drawing surface. This means you can't watch both your hand and the screen at the same time unless you're Marty Feldman. The only solution to this is just what Clint has suggested....a drawing surface that actually shows what's on the screen. Although they exist, they are HORRIBLY expensive (around $1500 for the small surface) and since I'm not getting paid for the work I do (with a few small exceptions) this is not about to happen in the forseeable future unless prices dramatically drop.

Using the mouse, I don't need to see what my hand is doing. Everything is happening on screen and I have far more control over what's going on. It's a totally different skill set. There are enough settings in Illustrator that I can duplicate a lot of things without the need of a pen. There are many, many ways to manipulate a drawn path. Some of the best artists here have never even owned an electronic pen. If they can do very well without it, I can too.

Otters, I have no argument against anything you say. If you are comfortable with what you do, and you indeed do it very well, and so be it. When I first got a computer and saw the mouse, I thought 'what a hideous device' and immediately got myself a Wacom kit. Once I'd learned the art of controlling it, I never once thought of changing no matter how many variations on the mouse have been developed. Later on, when I started teaching digital imaging in both 2 and 3D, my students who were attempting to learn the art saw how I did it, a great many of them immediately went on to the pen, with immediate benefits to their work. Having watched people drawing direct on to the screen, I came to the conclusion that if that is what they were comfortable with, then OK, but not for me, I value my eyesight too much.

Ever thought about doing a tute...or even 3 or 4 about using it Rat? What discourages me with it is the complete lack of control. Now, if someone was to actually explain this, it might be different.

I am reminded of the words of a famous artist who was once asked " How can I learn to draw?" The answer was "Draw". The same answer applies to the use of a Wacom pen. (The instructions actually come with it). However, some people seem to take to it more naturally than others. No tutes needed from me.

True. I tried about five times and gave up. Possibly the fact that I have a very poor quality pen and tablet didn't help.

And I shave with an electric razor firmly gripped in my fist.
