A quick update:
I've altered the shadow from the intake and started detailing the pods and tanks. Also added a few more markings etc.
Thanks for looking.

AT LAST!!!! Someone else who starts out in Illustrator. I just can't colour yet is all. Awesome work Andy! Do you get the line drawing done first and then work in Photoshop or do you use Illustrator ony.
Thanks.
I'm just getting to grips with using illustrator really and sorting out a workflow. But so far I've created all my paths in Illustrator on multiple layers (including rivets and screws etc using blends and expanding). I've then copied those paths into photoshop on seperate path layers. I'm now using the paths to create masks to paint in photoshop. For shading I tend to create a mask for an area using the paths. Then create new paths on a seperate shading path layer (the shape of shadow or highlight) and stroke the new path with various width and opacity brushes or gradient fills to create my highlights and shadows.
I've now idea if this is how most people work, but it works for me so far.
People work according to what works best for them. Ask anyone here what their work flow is and you'll get 30 different answers from the more sane and rational of us. You may want to consider solutions from the less sane members here as well. Your work flow is mandated by your level of understanding of these programs. It is also determined by your comfort level with the various tools in these programs. You are light years beyond me, as I am still stuck in an Autocad kind of environment. Colour and shading are, at the moment quite beyond me. It is nice to see however that at least one person is advancing in the same way I am. Beautiful work, and I hope to see much more of it!!!
Hi Andy,
You have pretty much described my work method exactly. Do you have a graphic arts background too?
Nope none at all. I'm a software engineer by trade. It's nice to know someone else uses the same method as I do and gets awesome results.
I looked at the tutorials on your website today, and it does describe how I work almost exactly. I still got some useful information from the though. It must be one of the best tutorials I've seen so far on the subject.

I use exactly the same method as well, except for the whole Illustrator part.![]()
