I would guess it probably didn't help all that much, but I'm sure it also helped keep dead bugs and junk out of the spinner.

Re: Another one to quibble over

Fritzie, as far as I can see, the E-1 was not cannon armed although there was provision for it. The E-2 mounted an MG-FF in the nose, but utilization of this weapon caused such severe airframe viabration that the E-2 series was quickly dropped after a very limited production run. I believe that the only ones delivered for actual service went to JG 26, but please don't quote me on that as I'm still researching. Following that, the E-3 through to E-9 had the capacity for an engine mounted cannon, but it was never utililized as far as I can tell. It was not until the introduction of the F series that the problems associated with an engine mounted cannon seem to have been resolved, and it was subsequently used on all following marks. If anyone has information to the contrary, please let us know.

    Hi Otter!

Great Bf 109 E drawings! Just one note to the E-7! The spinner should be a little bit more round and not as spiky as you have drawn it. I have never seen a Bf 109 E-3z. Please have a look here for all E variants: Falcon's Messerschmitt Bf 109 Hangar

And no single series Bf 109 E ever had a engine mounted cannon.

    Cheers, Simon

PS: Your early Fw 190 A looks good!

Re: Another one to quibble over

I keep looking at the E-7 spinner and the more I look, the more it bothers me. I took the shape directly from a photo, but something definitely just doesn't look right. I'll have to do more research Simon. As noted earlier, the only E to actually have an engine mounted cannon was the E-2 which utilized an MG-FF. Test results were so horrible (airframe vibration) that the series was quickly dropped and only a few were actually delivered to front line units. I imagine these were very quickly dropped from service or the MG-FF was removed. It wasn't until the F series that this problem seems to have been worked out.

As a note to others, my regular system is down, so I'm connecting via UBUNTU. Since I am unfamiliar with that OS, I can't use instant messenger (either version) or check my mail unless it's to my Yahoo addie. I expect to have the problem resolved in the next few days. I have to get back to the serious business of drawing, so I'm kinda going through withdrawl here. See you all again as soon as I get this *^&&$####@*!!! 'puter fixed.

Photos of the E-2 are very rare since production was dropped so quickly. Here are two. You can clearly see the engine mounted MG-FF.
