I'll call it what I want despite John's impending protestations. It could be an SBD three and a half

SBD-3? Looks to be -5.
Perhaps worthy of its own thread?![]()

Gentlemen,
I present you SBD-3, about half done. I mean, who can wait for GFR's machine guns!
Nice start. Forward fuselage needs more roundness IMHO.
Perhaps worthy of its own thread?![]()
About what Gamery said, I'm seeing that but I'd check your top vs. bottom shading. The upper side is more well defined and darker but the underside hardly has any shadow on it. Maybe balance them a bit?
FAST AND BULBOUS!
gents,
I am forced to concur that you are right on all counts. adopted your improvements, but have a long way to go,
MC
Simmerdudes,
as flown by SB-2 on the 10 March 42 raid against Lae. Didya see GFR's gun? THAT is what I'm talking about,
MC
Summat ain't quite right here. There's a hollow cavity in the fuselage underside to accomodate the bomb???
Yes, there is.
At the risk of hijacking my own thread.
You really need to decide which variant you are going to display, that -5 series cowl flap and it drop shadow are incredibly distracting.
Re-count the number of holes that you have on the dive brakes. You're a few short.
Where are your rivets? Its about the only thing that visually separates the SBD from a garden variety Harvard.
Your middle window seems to be missing its rear frame.
You need to decide between the highlights forward on the cowl, and those on the fuselage, currently the dont match. tHe strong highlights on the cowl are really flattening out the forward fuselage, just behind it.
Wing bomb mount?
Scoop atop the cowl? Deleted on later mks.
Next to the wing, Props are the hardest thing to render correctly, but you need to spend more time getting the look of yours right.
As you can see, I've spent way too long looking at my SBD profile and reference images.
Great .30 cals.
Nice markings, I want to do an earlier "meatball' version at some time.
Good to see you've given your sunset glass effect the arse.
As always its the little details that make/don't make a profile work.
One last thing...Great .30 cals.![]()

After opening this large file for a few days in a row and not feeling any real desire to add the final details and fix its shortcomings, I've decided that its time to put this one in the bottom draw whilst I have an extended period of contemplation and decide exactly what its going to take to actually finish it.
I will get back to it sometime in the future.
Time for a fresh challenge aircraft and armour are boring, maybe a boat! Yeah....definitely...A boat. Might be time for a watercraft forum to be added, eh mods?.
