Well the narrow chord preceded the broad chord rudder, it was used up untill the F-104C but the F and G started using the broad chord. I think the D also used it but not 100% sure It allowed for greater stability and better control.

I thought I'd share this: I just clicked on this thread again and it opened on the first page and one of the first responses was from Otter on 17th Feb 2010. I had to do a double take and check the year. A wave of warmth came over me as I remembered our friend.
