Notice that the B-17E in the above pictures had the early remote controlled turret and not the later Sperry Ball turret. If you look very closely at this picture, you can see that both B-17Es captured by the Japanese had this type of turret. There are two small bumps under the fuselage, the forward one being the turret and the smaller rear one is the observation/sighting blister.
It's torn up from 60 years in a swamp, but this picture gives a good idea about the general arrangement of the two exterior parts of the turret. Notice there are also two small windows above the sighting blister for a better view to the sides.
