Thread: Happy New Year

    Re: Happy New Year

One of the very first profiles I ever made (in blue
You aren't the only one! A lot of people have done that plane in blue. I'm not sure where that started, Profile Publications maybe?
So don't feel bad, unless at 10 years old you had researched the pilot and the markings of his Jasta, you're excused

I always try to make 12 profiles
Just 12??? Why not 20-30? Or why not just 10? You mean I could have stopped with the Zeros a long time ago?

    Re: Happy New Year

BTW, I got your mail about the Spits and on checking some of the pics on airlines, it got me wondering again . . . some pics seem to show a nice curve to the vertical fin and others seem to show it quite a bit flatter.
Actually, I've reverted and gone back to the earlier fin model. A few days ago, I looked at one of the "modified" profiles in small size and thought "my god, what the f**k is that?"...

While I was working on the fin and looking at it closely, it made sense to flatten it a bit. When viewing it "from a distance", it just doesn't look right. So I've cancelled the mod for the moment and slapped my own hand real hard for doing a lousy job... (Spares John the trouble).

So you shouldn't bother looking into it (but I appreciate the intention), especially of you're ill. I've also tried a few improvements to the nose section following your comments, but haven't made any progress that satisfied me. For the time being, I'm keeping the template as it is, and will modify when I manage something I like better.

In any case, I'm confident the shape isn't too bad, having mostly worked off long-distance photos and not scale plans. Although there is always room for improvement.

The flu is getting the better of me atm
I hope you recover quickly. I'd like to see some J-I Fw 190s. (I really liked your 109s so I'm expecting the 190s to be as good or better than these.).

    Re: Happy New Year

    Always soooo many questions . . . .

This is my take on 152/17 flown by quite a famous WWI ace.
Big debate on the demarcation line down the spine, some show it as ending just behind the pit (like I've done it here), some show it to follow the side panels red. If I'm being honest, I think its the latter, but big arguments suggest its done as shown. No s/n's on the wing struts or the rudder due to over painting?

So hammer away at it please.

I find that the template does not get refined until at least 4 or 5 schemes are done with it.

Interesting comment. I'd never thought about it but it's true.

    Re: Happy New Year

Thanks guys, a few more lil detailed updates . . .moved a few things and added a few bits of texture here and there.

Moved markings too, how silly do I feel messing even the simple stuff up?

Big thanks to BH for the extra pics mailed, very helpful thank BH.

This one features on the front cover of squadron/signal publications 98
Helped by the data found at FokkerDr1.com - Main page

All being well 2 more and I should have the template down.

    Oh, very nice! von Tutschek-

He flew that plane on his last fight.
Adolf Ritter von Tutschek - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Say, I haven't been checking of anything, but a good many of these planes had personal add-ons like rear view mirrors, flair racks, usually right side, flair pistols ports through the fabric, and high telescopic sights. At least one guy had an early reflector sight.
Also many planes had field mods, like round or rectangular magneto access panels on the sides of the fuselage near the cowling, and some mods specific to Jastas like the Jasta 2 wheel spreader wing supports or the rectangular mag ports for Jasta 6.
Anyway, be looking for those details. People who know these planes well will be happy if you get that stuff right

Examples for Jasta 2 wheel strut-

OH OH...one other thing, TWO MAJOR TYPES OF PROPELLERS! The one you've got looks like the Heine, but I think the one you'll find on more Dr.Is is the Axial. It' more symmetrical as far as the leading and trailing edges.
...then of course you'll need to ID which plane had which propeller...

Fokker Dr.1 Prop ID - Wooden Propeller Forum

Of the planes that I posted pictures of, Von Janzen 403/17, Voss Fi.103, Manfred Von Richthofen, all those are Axial but I notice not a single profile shown has the correct Axial side view drawn out correctly.
You could be the first Jester!!!

    Noted thanks BH.
I've been looking at the props, mirrors, guns and sights options, even spotted the round and square panels, but had not noticed the spreaders.

    Re: Happy New Year

At least this is a fairly simple plane with a small production run and a short service life.
    I think you're almost there.
Did you see your email yet?
