    Re: Albatros D series

Very nice weathering... and details on that!
I'm making the same subject in a skin for RoF's D.Va (only D.Va in RoF)
I used Rufe's RGB as basis for my metal primer...
I had seen too the photo of this plane with the weights table erased and always thought it was a kind of post retouch on the print, (censorship?),
but I found this one in WW site and reveals that you are right.
(I should erase them too, from my skin now).
I often see the rudder in upperside dark lozenge, can you tell definately from the second pic?
The second pic shows the spinner in gray color though...could have been painted black later nonetheless.
I would like to hear your opinion on these details...
    Here is my WiP skin:

    Really nice!

Let's make prints of it. I'll be the first buyer, too!

I would like to hear more from Greg Van. I got some info from him but I'll have to wait for more.
I can tell you his take is that since early in Jasta 37, with D.IIs, most all planes had black spinners. He says, and I'm sure he's right, that even if it isn't black in that photo, it will be eventually. After thinking about it, I decided that if I were going to do the gray spinner I'd do it with the cowling panels off as it is in the photos.
I think it's really a "your guys is as good as mine" kind of thing.
I'm pretty sure the stenciling is scrubbed off the plane. No idea why. Greg might know more about this.
But again, I'm mostly guessing. Same with the rudder, I lifted Ronny's color, I know he had the inside scoop from Greg on the planes he did for Wingnuts. I'm going with the "it's good enough for me" idea here figuring the level of research is more than I could come up with on my own. It does look dark in the photo, but then again the whole plane does.
If I learn more I'll let you know.
Nice skin by the way!!! Did you do the leading edge brace in a different color? I did mine darker but maybe it should be more noticeable?

Let's make prints of it. I'll be the first buyer, too!
I'm REAL close! I know you've heard that before. I'll this week

    Re: Albatros D series

    Thanks for the answer Dave!
That's pretty much what I was thinking too, studying the Jasta 37 photos I've got, from that period, (late September '17).
Jasta 37 was flying Albatros D.III-s till then, (Johannisthal Werke ones).
So when they received their D.V-s in late September they were retrofitted with the reinforcing braces to prevent the already known wing failure issues. (I have seen them in every Jasta 37 D.V from that batch).
They were probably taken from the D.Va production, that's why they were primed with the darker green primer.
The funny thing is that their later all black D.Va-s lack the braces!

Anyway, I "scrubbed" off the stencil and gave my skin an undersides lozenge rudder...(for a change)
You used a neutral gray primer, what do you think of my interpretation, (Rufe's matching), that has a greenish tint?

    Re: Albatros D series

Very nice! I probably should be using that color sample Rufe matched too. I just see the metal parts as being very light on this plane. The wrong way to go when using photo refterence; I guess I can't disown my own artistic license.
Yours is an accurate guess as mine.
    BIG FUN

Does this mean I have a steak dinner in my future?

Another one, a one-off kind of thing from Jasta 10 flown by the then CO, von Althaus.
The color is via the late great Dan-San Abbott.

Pretty nifty looking kite with that deluxe head rest fairing
Speaking of, that fairing isn't shaded quite right yet.
I still need more work, this plane looks pretty messed up, lots of scuffs and what not. The markings need more work too.
Not bad for a few hours after a long day of work

Very nice. The "1" looks like it needs to be nudged up and left a tiny bit.

Looking forward to the finished profile.
