    Re: Albatros D series

Jeez...5 minutes to edit. I guess you'll just have to do without more of my incredible insight.

    Re: Albatros D series

The thing behind the prop is the tie off from the prop blade covers. They had bags of some sort that slip over the blades. You can even see tied off if you look close.
Yes, that's a lap belt. The panel line you see is just coincidence. The place where the buckle is riveted to the belt just happens to be at the same place as the panel that runs along the longerons.
For me, that picture is one moment in time. I'm not painting that exact moment or doing a scene with included backdrops. My plane isn't on the ground, nor is it in flight or intended to show action.
That's why I didn't paint the seatbelt or propeller cover. I might do stuff like that on some profiles but it would be something where I wanted to tell a story and something that really adds to the overall look. I'm always a little leery about duplicating a specific photo as a profile, why not just paint the photo exactly as it is?
    (I guess that's just me)
So just a plain plane profile, no extras for this one
Nice catches though GFR. I haven't see any clear photos of those covers, there seem to be several variations and you don't see them very often so I gather they were a nicety and couldn't always be depended on.

The belts are out over the edge of the cockpit as often as they are not visible. I think it depended on the flight crew and if the plane was sitting for a while, was just flying or was about to fly.

    Lots of little details!

hmmm...now I'm not sure about that thing on the cowling. I'll scan the photo I have when I get home. That thing looks more three dimensional and isn't very round and is out of line for a white dot...

    Re: Albatros D series

Scanning won't help, it's pretty unclear in the printed version I have. I'm reasonably sure it's higher and not nearly as round as the other dots, and it does have a dimensional quality to it. That's my reasoning of why I think it isn't another dot, but something else.
What I thought I was seeing on the propeller blade isn't a cover, it's rigging wires that are only visible over the propeller and the wash out in the light areas around it. I thought they were tie down cords.
I'll ask Jim and Greg what they think, but they are both pretty busy these days.

    Re: Albatros D series

Yeah I had my doubts about the issues I raised in my post and came to a similar conclusion to you about the seatbelt and it is what I was going to add to my non-editable post. However I'm still not sure about the irregular circle shape directly behind the spinner, just looks painted to my (non) expert eyes.

My edit would have made the op a lot clearer, but it was getting late, and they were relatively minor details in the scheme of this profile, like you say "moments in time." I understand completely.

    Just observations.

Those were good points Giant. I still want to look into the "thing" near the spinner.
Another thing that bugs me is the diagonal reflection under the wing just forward of the cockpit. I'm pretty sure it's light reflecting off something, but what? Aside from a flare gun tube sticking out of the fuselage, which is pretty common, I can't think of what it is.

Here the new one, still a wip, many details and bit are missing.

The colors are still debatable...but these are what most people have speculated on.
Always a big time favorite of mine!

    Re: Albatros D series

    Awesome!
Is there a hint of the serial No of this plane?
I have seen Emil Thuy's, similarly painted machine and it was an early one with the horizontal nose plank arrangement...(D.2016/17).

I have one pic of this von Schleich's machine, but the area in question is in shadow and even if I think I see a later,
vertical arrangement, as you depicted it, I can't be sure...

OK, I found a web pic of the photo I was referring to...
    So what do you think?
