    Re: Albatros D.III

    Thanks, Dave!
Those skins are a combined effort of Graf, JFM and me...(the TEAM JOHANNISTHAL).
When the template was created (a year ago) we missed that little detail of the fillets...
The skins were created months ago, I haven't been able to work further on both Albatros (D.III-D.V) templates,
for some time now, due to RL pressure...
The Venetian Red is Jim's choice, but in RoF light is treated in a peculiar way,
so that the actual raw colour you are using in the template is presented a lot altered in game.
I confirm that the wheel covers on the Johannisthal machines was made of fabric.
I can't be sure what colour was painted though...
Even if it was painted with the same primer as the metal parts, the actual hue from a metal or a fabric painted part would not be the same.
Not to mention the lighting conditions and the film used for the photograph...

Albatros D.II-s are usually depicted with the wheel covers painted in the undersides colour. It seems logical for the D.III-s as well.
The Schwerin factory fresh late D.III, seems to have the wheel covers left in clear dope as the rudder.
I'm typing all those info by heart... I should probably dig more into GVV notes and come back later.

Hey Snofox, I had meant to ask what you meant by "training."
I'm more familiar with birch having no knots as well.
Here is a photo showing the knots-

As far as I know these planes were strictly covered with birch but I'm sure they used what they had and I'm also sure they had shortages too.
Thanks again for the wood samples

    Thanks for the info Elephant!
The Schwerin factory fresh late D.III
I've already seen several that look clear doped, especially the one I posted above showing the knotty paneling.

That sounds like a great job! I love wood and I used to run a collage art department woodshop when I was younger. I don't get to see much wood with my computer job

Here's the earlier version of the D.III. I think I've got all the back-dated stuff on there.

And here's the OAW version trying out the tan-gray metal. Too light maybe?

I don't think that the tan-grey looks too light...
I like it more as a matter of fact.

It's different, that's for sure. I wonder if it was used on OAW D.IIs...

    Re: Albatros D.III

Voss had two D.IIIs??? That's confusing! After reading two different posts on the subject I can't make heads or tails out of most of it, since several details weren't mentioned in these posts.
The short version is this: Voss had a early D.III with a central radiator and a half round foot step while in Jasta 2. This plane had the hearts, swastika, and later wreaths and ribbons. I couldn't find an image of this plane with the heart on the upper fuselage.
Later when he moved to Jasta 5 there are photos of him with a seemingly identical plane...only now it has an offset radiator and plumbing to match. This plane also has a heart on the upper fuselage. The foot step can't be seen in any of the series of him and his family at Jasta 5. The upper wing has white stripes and different camouflage as well.
It also has a goofy radiator header tank that I have no clear photos of.
Most people at the Aerodrome believe these are different planes but it's possible that only the upper wing or all wings were changed.
Jasta 2 had black spinners and wheels, but Jasta 5 had red spinners starting with Voss's command. Wheels? Usually they look very dark but in some photos they seem light. ???

Mostly guesses based on what I see and what the experts say-

I'm still not sure I buy the two plane idea and until I see a photo from Jasta 5 that shows the foot step I won't be totally convinced.

    Re: Albatros D.III

Ha ha, Voss' plane, what a headache!
JFM suggests it's the same plane that received a new pair of wings...
