    Re: Painting a YZR500

I am still progressing on the GIMP version of this, though slowly.

Today I traced my pencil sketching onto a sheet of marker paper lightly with a standard #2 pencil. Then I inked using an india ink pen, filling the large areas with black acrylic paint with a brush. The artwork is about 4 by 5 inches.

Then I used my Copic cool gray markers to shade the inking. I used 30%, 50%, and 70% markers for this project. Final detailing was done with more india ink, brushed black acrylic paint, and touches of brushed white acrylic paint for the highlighting.

Marker work is always like a one way street for me. Any use of a dark tone is impossible to cover without overpainting it with white paint. I do enjoy the black and white work though, deciding where to use which tones for best presenting the shape of the subject is quite challenging.

    Re: Painting a YZR500

So what, like four years later? I painted the brakes and front fork today.

Every time I update Linux and restore my backup files, I see this GIMP .xcf file sitting there unfinished and I wonder what it might have become. So I unpacked the Wacom from a box and did some painting!

    Re: Painting a YZR500

This evening I painted little new material. Most time was adjusting the colors and details within the front suspension fork and brake system. There are still a few pieces to add, but this is a better result IMO.

    Re: Painting a YZR500

Well, I finished most of the details on the front fork today. However, as I completed more details, it became obvious that the central yellow colored hub spokes were poorly executed. I had to repaint them. None of the original art could be edited, as IMO the basic work was too far off.

Worthwhile effort. A much more solid appearance than before. This also resulted in more of the central red wheel hub being visible, so I had to paint that, too.

Weird thought... What if I painted this as a "cutaway" view?

VERY NICE once again! Cutaway meaning what is under the fairings or will you do inside the tires, wheels, engine etc? It sure would be cool but a LOAD of hard work!!!

    Re: Painting a YZR500

    Thanks guys.

Blowhard, yea I mean with see-thru (or partially so) fairings. I'll think about it a bit before I decide. At least one good thing about doing see-thru fairings would be that I could always just do that with some opacity tricks. Then I could easily output a solid exterior painting, too.

    Re: Painting a YZR500

I went ahead with the idea of showing off the inside workings. The bulk of the frame is there, plus a few of the smaller parts mounted to it.

The rear most aspects of the frame are drawn in simple two color shapes. These will be covered by the parts in the middle, but I wanted to have them as a perspective reference as I go.

EDIT: New pic uploaded above. Some more stuff like the trailing arm hinge shown.
