    Re: Painting a YZR500

Here's the progress through the weekend. Some new stuff, like the front fender, and lots fixed. All the sponsor decals are finished (two need minor fixes). Also used a 1 pixel eraser and anti aliased multiple layers, as well as fix any areas where two transparency edges were overlapping on duplicated layers.

This could be "done". I'm going to set it as my desktop wallpaper for a week and see if I spot any errors before I look at printing it.

From here I'll probably buy a print. I've got some room where I can hang something, and this would be nice.

I think WalMart does the large size prints on photo paper for a very low cost. I might buy a couple of sizes and see which I prefer.

    Re: Painting a YZR500

I've had this up as my desktop wallpaper for a while now. And day by day, something about the leg and knee has been getting more irritating.

I think it looks too tightly tucked in toward the bike, and too far under the elbow.

    So here it is adjusted...

Nice! Have you done one with wheel blur yet?

    Re: Painting a YZR500

I did a quickie test for the blurred wheels, but the results were inconclusive as to whether I liked it. For sure it would look more "photographic"... but at the expense of some detail.

Sometime over the next week I'll try to do a better job and see what happens.

    Re: Painting a YZR500

Well I had a quiet Saturday, so I went ahead and looked at the wheel blur again. And I still don't like it. It's not bad actually, from a visual point. It just seems like all of my beautiful wheel details are gone!

Looking back at my old dune buggy, I didn't do a wheel blur there, either.

Next time I draw something with spinning wheels, I need to remember to draw them blurred right from the get-go... so I don't feel bad doing it after the fact!

    Re: Painting a YZR500

Coming back to it, the wheel blur does look pretty good.

Anyway, last thing to look at is a bit of noise, as you suggested earlier. I used a single pixel grain size, a very slight blur, and then backed the opacity down to 50% or so. At present the noise is applied over the entire illustration. Since I was working with lots of simple shading techniques, there were quite a few "textureless" areas.

Here are a couple of crops to judge the effect. I hope it's visible enough in these images.
