Re: Bf 109 G-10 profile project

I dunno Cap. Initially I had the filler cap higher up, but the folks at Chino told me to move it down accompanied by a photo where the filler cap actually cut into the flange of the spark plug intake. I can't show you that photo because I'm expressly forbidden to do so. That felt just plain wrong to me. Here's one I can show you though, and the filler cap sits quite low. In all the photos I have it seems to wander up and down, so my guess is that it depends on who manufactured the aircraft. In the end I stuck it in between what they showed me and some photos I have that show it quite high up on the nose. The arbitrary placement made them grumble a bit, but in the end they said OK.

The example you show (Yellow 13) is a Buchon reconstruction and there are quite a lot of differences between a Buchon manufacture and those produced in Germany. You cannot rely on restorations at all for accurate details. Even the rivet patterns differ. Most details are probably so small they would be lost on a print the size Simon is doing...but I know. I've been studying this beast for 30 odd years. That is why I'm taking the time to work out the details many couldn't give a rat's behind about.

By the way...your work is really excellent and I've saved several examples to my private library. So the next question is WHEN is der Kaptain ready to add to that luscious group next?

Re: Bf 109 G-10 profile project

    Hi Otter!

I’m sorry but your drawing is really not correct at that point!

    Have a look here: http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/walkar...943/POF048.jpg
The pic shows the front of Yellow 13. That’s a G-10/U4 and not a Buchon.

    Another G-10 nose: http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/walkar...610824rg-2.jpg

    Another G-10 nose: http://109lair.hobbyvista.com/walkar.../610937.01.jpg

Your pic shows a G-6 (ex trop-Version). There the oil filler cap was situated lower.

The profile will be printed about 25cm wide. So these details will not get lost. I don’t mind if the rivets are not 100% correct, but the main things should be okay. Hope to finish the wing today evening!

    Cheers, Simon

Re: Bf 109 G-10 profile project

Sime, that's where I had the oil filler cap before and the folks at Chino said it was wrong. I'll ask for a clearer explanation from them, but responses take a while. I'm aware it's a G-6 photo. It was my understanding initially that the G-10 was remanufactured out of old G-6's and was a stop-gap until the G-14 came out, but the reverse seems to be the case since the G-14 was produced BEFORE the G-10 came out. The 10 was a new airframe and the final development of the G sub-variant. Here's the original placement before I changed it.

@ John: Don't blame me. You were around the bend long before I met you. I went off the deep end when I started researching this A/C which has pretty much turned into a career now.

Re: Bf 109 G-10 profile project

    Hi Otter!

The G-14 was developed out of the G-6. It was just an improvement of the G-6 and the production run parallel to the G-6. Most of the G-14 still had DB 605 A engines. First G-14 came to front during summer 1944. The G-10, which was planned as a supplement to the K-series, was handed over to the pilots during autumn 1944.
If the G-10 was a AS with DB 605AS the plane had the smaller oil cooler. Planes with DB 605 D had the larger oil cooler.

All the pics I posted show G-10 and not G-10AS. So I the position of the filler cap for the oil depends on which engine the plane had.

I really can recommand the "Bible" for the 109.

    Hi Otter!

Great pic! Could you please check if the plane has a larger oil cooler or the smaller! If small, it's a DB 605 AS (so maybe G-14AS or G-10AS)

Otter! Your pic shows a Bf 109 G-6, W.Nr. 163824. The plane is under display in Australia!
