    Re: Albatros D series

    Hey,

I forgot you asked for some other photos. Here's a shot of the footstep off one of Udet's D.Vs (the dark area in the upper right of the photo is the lower left part of the "L" in L: (Edit: I just noticed that angel. This place put it there, not I. I typed the uppercase version of lo.)

You can see how it's attached to the fuselage and also a smaller row of 5 rivets across the top of the opening where the internal hinge attached.

Thanks again Jim! An excellent photo! I'll probably do Udet's wood, silver and black planes.

This photo, the Wingnuts website, Monnington's D.V, is pretty good too

And this one that I got from the Aerodrome-

Not good enough to see the detail but it's the same footstep and the angle matches the lower longeron.

Mine is pretty close, the proportions aren't 100% and my rivets and recessed step are a little much-

Here is what I find strange, just about every drawing and profile I've seen inducing Bob Waugh's drawings show the step as much smaller and slanted more than the lower longeron. After looking at photo of the D.Va at Canberra, NASM and the Vintage Aviator's plane. I could tell the drawings were off. It took me a while to find a good enough war time photo and sure enough, it wasn't like the drawings either. With your photo and the 2 I posted it's pretty clear the drawings are wrong in that respect. But why? Was there an alternate version of the foot step or did everyone copy that mistake from earlier drawings?

I've got a few more anomalies I'd like to go over but maybe we can continue this in email? I'll send you a PM.

    Thanks again Jim

Edit: OOPS, I can't seem to PM you here so I sent one to you at the Aerodrome

Okay, I'll look at the Aerodrome for the PM. Maybe you can't PM me here because I'm too cherry? That may be the reason why I can't make a signature, either.

Hey Elephant, Jim is right, if you want them to match, you have to draw them out yourself. If you don't want to go that far and want something close you can try Bernard-

    Re: Albatros D series

    Wow, that's brilliant thanks!
I, actually, just wanted to make some historically plausible skins for my virtual squad mates in RoF Campaign and making the fonts by myself was too much...
I can easily modify "Bernard" though...
    Thanks again, Blowhard!

    Re: Albatros D series

More VERY slow progress. I did the lower wing twice yesterday and ended up redoing most of it today. I knew it would be a pain! Aside from the shading I'm pretty happy with the shape. Not and easy shape either, a deep airfoil with the centerline close to the lower edge, a slight dihedral, and a top all that off with a 30 degree rake to the wingtips! Then add the curved edged iron cross! UGH

Getting the shading to look right on solid color, 3 tone camouflage and printed fabric just isn't easy...it might get some revision. The cross might need more work too.
I looked over every other profile and drawing available and I ended up making it how I thought it should look rather than how it probably should look. Mark Miller's 3D profiles show something that just doesn't look anything like how I'd expect it to look.

His is probably spot-on but I'm more interested in showing what I'd expect to see. Mine is closest to Bob Waugh's museum drawings with a little of Jim Miller's profiles with more curve and rake to the rear edge.

And a familiar ace's plane I started playing with-
