    Re: Albatros D series

You seem to be using the underside lozenge on the rudder
That's correct. I'm not sure why but most D.V rudders that had printed fabric had the underside color on them. Maybe all of them, I'm not sure. Same with OAW D.IIIs too.
I bet JFM knows the details.

I've been thinking about doing the rigging...but I'm too lazy!

    Re: Albatros D series

I was digging in the Aerodrome yesterday, to find a definite answer on the rudder lozenge and Dan-San Abbott quotes, on that matter:

The fabric was applied with the pattern repeat parallel to the rudder post. The Rudder was covered with the dark five color pattern.
    Happy New Year,
    Dan-San

I guess JFM would have noticed if somehing was obviously wrong... after all he commented about the reversed logo on the rudder!

When I try to recall light lozenge on rudder Monnington's plane comes in mind:

Look at this one though... it seems that the darker one is in use...

    I guess both were used.
I hope Jim will illuminate us, as I'm a bit confused at the moment...

Did you look here too? My own post
    Albatros D.V Rudder?

It really isn't a question that can be answered, you have to approach it on a plane by plane basis.

    Re: Albatros D series

Thanks Dave, I appreciate your help!
    Keep up your fine work!

PS: It's really funny that the on the pic of the rudder on display there is another exception present...
Look at the little Albatros logo... the head is facing backwords...JFM!

    Re: Albatros D series

Yep, that's an OAW built rudder, you'll notice JFM covered that one
Now, there are always exceptions and the Albatros D.Va (OAW) had its rudder logo facing ("flying away") from the spinner
That color rudder I posted at the Aerodrome is a D.III OAW, but that D.III style rudder was the same as the one on the D.V and D.Va and the same with the OAW Albatros logo. Go figure!
It just gets more complicated every time I look! There's too much for me to keep in my head, that's for sure. I'm still trying to noodle out the basics details, then I'll get in to the complicated markings

    Re: Albatros D series

You guys are on it. As have you, I've seen rudders in upper and lower irreg. polygon fabric. However, I'm not learned enough yet to state what batches used what fabric.

BTW, I have a photo of Johannisthal-built D.Va 5777/17 and it has the port rudder logo flying away (facing right) from the spinner.

    Stropp looks fantastic!

    Re: Albatros D series

May I shift the conversation over to the D.III three tone camo?
I have seen you Dave, participating actively in a thread over at The Aerodrome about vintage color values.
Could you give, (JFM also if he is reading), your best approximation on the colors of that particular camo?

    Re: Albatros D series

The 3 color? I have some but they are guesses. Rufe has the 3 color for LVG built D.IIs, perhaps those are similar? JFM will know..I hope
