Thread: Harrier FRS1

The fuselage in front of the intake does flatten out but the area does need work and agree on the changes to the actual intake.

Thanks for all the feedback, it really helps to have extra eyes looking at my work! I see what you mean about the flattened sides, and I'm working on moving the highlights down, as well as expanding the shadows to fix this.

As for armament, yep sidewinders and these guys for the Indian navy variants. Also have a few what if's planned.

Ok, I think it looks a bit better now. I've reworked the highlights on the intake and forward fuselage. Next I need to draw in the belly gunpod.

    Chris,
Soooo much better! Really nice shadows.

For your consideration, this photo on Airliners has the right sun position and shows some helpful highlights. My only nit-pick is the shape definition for the fairing in front of the forward nozzle. Right now it looks pretty flat. Maybe some darker shadowing on its bottom and a highlight could bring out its fullness?

    Great work!

even the matt finish SHars had stronger definition of highlight, it seems to be lacking on the nose atm...really must finish my SHar one day.

If you're not in a rush try to get a copy of THIS, Jester found me a copy for a whole quid, bargain doesn't sum it up

    Re: Harrier FRS1

Thanks for the feedback! I've tried to deepen the shadows under the nozzle fairing so that it stands out more. Perhaps I need to fiddle with the shading on the nozzle itself?

I also did try to add some specular highlights but I couldn't get them to look right so I just left them off. Mine will be a very matte jet.

    Gunpod's still in progress.

Somehow the sidewinder launcher and the pylon it is attached to blend into the tank behind them too much. Also the pylon and launcher look a bit sparse on detail. Do you have a close up of the real thing you could post?

Even with the matt finish you have strong shadows under the wing and tail so the highlights would be much stronger on the RN aircraft, the only really matt aircraft are the Indian SHars in the later light grey.

Really not that hard to build them up, just create a new layer, take the brush opacity down to something like 1%, make it as soft as possible, build up gently and then whack in a gaussian blur where you need to break it up.

Hope you don't mind me jumping in on your thread with this one which is still WIP, but it might help with the highlighting.

Such a shame they had to spoil XZ457 and upgrade her, was a thing of beauty when in her prime during the 80s.
