We'll get it painted, it might take me a few years but it will be painted...I hope![]()
Here's a wip of the sprocket so far, I'm still rounding cast corners and filling in the surface details-

beautifull,
just one little point, wheres your split pins(or cotter pins) on the half shaft nuts

From what I can see, there are none, at least not on the restorations. But I'm not even sure those are correct for this sprocket. Try finding a war time photo that shows those nut/bolts clear enough.
But, when all is said and painted, that stuff will be SO small no one will be able to see them![]()

John, you twit! Those are not half shaft nuts, they are self locking nuts just like yours which I don't imagine have a cotter pin in them.
sorry GM,
they used cotter pin during the war, not self lockingand my nuts are so rusty you can't tell whats holding them on
self locking nuts have a tendancy to strip threads when removed, because thats how they work, and pulling the stud and fitting new everytime is a no go!
by the way, the nuts are holding the half shaft or drive shaft in place, mind you the French always did it different. hahahahahahahahahahhahhahahahahah
just looked at your image, this one is fitted with locking tabs!!!!!!!!!!!!! must be a restoration mod

Like I was saying, I can't confirm those are correct. I've have yet to find war time photo that shows those bolts close enough to tell. Only a few restorations have this nut/bolt combo. Most use closed bolt heads and an even smaller group use non locking nuts. Most don't have washers either.
I have added washers to mine but from restorations and other late war tanks like the Tiger II and late Panthers, I really believe they should be 2x washers, er, washers that have space for 2 bolts...that is 6 washers for the twelve bolts.
I'll post a few pics later.
But maybe no washers???
Thinking about it, it seems closed bolt heads would be way better than threaded bolts protruding from nuts exposed to all damage they would stand up too. Threads don't like damage!!!
I don't suppose anyone has any war time photos of this late style Panzer IV drive sprocket that shows this detail???

i will check my books![]()
