    Re: People profiles???

Still the feet look twisted comparing to the legs.
If you want to portray the feet-boots in a kind of profile position you have to adjust the curves of the legs to match...
the stronger curve should be in the insides.
Also the boots seem to have too thick soles.
Check out some boots in profile:

    Re: People profiles???

    elephant is absolutely right.
Dave, the toes are too far apart. Here's the picture to give you the general idea:

Btw, I think the puttees should be thicker (so far they look more like bandage) and little darker.
And why did you do the brown boots? I think they should be black (and polished) and not so heavy like yours:

I'm really eager to see the result of your work.
P.S.: Are you sure about the overall cap & uniform tunic (beneath the leather coat) color? I think it should be more green. (And if you apply some grain filter to it -- or at least add some noise -- you'll get perfect wool texture look)

    Sincere regards,
    Mangas.

    Re: People profiles???

About the colour of the boots, either brown or black should be OK.
The regulation for changing from brown to black was from early 1916.
(look at my pic from Jasta 6, from late '16, both were worn)
The transaction wouldn't have been instant but, considering that the reference photo was taken in the summer of 1918,
    black is more probable.
I found another pic from that day.
The boots look, to me at least, darker than the coat.

    Re: People profiles???

I see what you guys are saying but look at the last photo you posted Elephant, or this one; that's my reference. The curves of the legs and the splay of the feet is in this photo. There is no doubt that what I've done matches the legs in the photo.
Look at his legs and feet. Can you tell me the photo is wrong, or if not, how it doesn't match inn context?
I have some minor shading to work out but what the photo shows is reflected in my drawing. We can argue anatomy all day, but if you want to site references, use the photo at hand and not other poses and angles.

About the color, there wasn't even one style of uniform, let alone one color. The German uniforms ranged anywhere from brown grey, to almost all allk grey, to bright green you've shown and ever combination there of. I'll post examples of an original uniform from Schleich's original regiment, which is most likely correct, when I get home. There were literally hundreds or uniform styles from WW1 and as far as I know not one of them was ever produced in a standardized color or style.
As far as boots, no real regulation for officers! Most officers had their boots custom made, certainly a titled officer like Schleich who had a penchant for "special" gear wouldn't have had rank-and-file regulation boots. Officers always bought their own gear at this time and for all we know he had British boots to go with his coat.
Aren't my boots darker than the coat?
I think the puttees should be thicker
    Ah...look no further-
I may still work on the boots more but I'd rather stick to the photo of Schleich rather than change the pose of the legs...which would require a redraw of the coat...and so on.

And if you apply some grain filter to it -- or at least add some noise -- you'll get perfect wool texture look
Did you see the large detail I posted, is that not a nice wool look?

    Re: People profiles???

    Hi BH,

I think your edit on the shoes is subtle, but does help. And IMO, the splay of the feet looks fine. Actually a natural stance.

I made this GIF animation to show what I think catches my eye: The left foot laces (his left) appear to be farther out than his toe would indicate. This might be related to the shoe design, itself, though? I'm not sure.

    Re: People profiles???

My left or your left? Aw hell, I fixed the wrong one! I honestly thought the other foot looked more wrong. I may end up redrawing both even though it's not much fun

    Here is some color info;

You can get an idea of the colors I was going for here, and you can see how much variation there is with the color "feldgrau."

Here's a really cool picture posted by a guy at the Aerodrome to illustrate the correct Bavarian 11th Infantry Regiment collar "lace."

Now...about the hat, not sure now, but I think I determined that von Schleich's hat didn't have any piping around the crown unlike like all the examples. Is this right? I don't know, it does look like it's not there but I can say if it's correct.

By the way Elephant, I DO get what you're saying about the legs...but I'm still going for what the photo looks like. Perhaps I'll have to redraw the legs to look more correct if they seem that far off. But I DO stand (pun intended) on the wide splayed feet, it's the stance he uses in all of the posed photos similar to the one I used, and also in the one you posted.

    Re: People profiles???

I' didn't post the other pic to lecture you, Dave...LOL!
Nor I think the legs are too far apart.
The problem as I see it...is that your figure matches almost identically the reference photo up to the ankles (perspective and all)
but for your own profile purpose you force the feet to stand on that straight line,
changing the perspective and creating that optical inconsistency...

I think, "THINK" I've addressed the problems mentioned. I've been looking at it so long I can't tell if it better or worse now
